Why am I doing this? I thought I was gonna work on my final project :V where did this come from? Oh gosh...

Okay, I was supposed to work on a monster design based on spotted hyenas, but after drawing all the "anatomy studies" I felt that it would be a shame not to share my notes to the rest of you guys.

It surprised me how extremely rare it is to find a decent guide in Hyena Anatomy, still I actually often sees many hyena-fursonas on dA. So I thought, what the heck, they deserve a little guide.

I might do more of these "mini-guides", but they will probably only focus on animals with a more unique anatomy. Or animals that has WAY to few tutorials about. And I wont promise a flood of new tutorials, these are only reference guides.

AND YES I will probably submit a tutorial about dinosaurs... ;)

I love your tutorials! They are incredibly helpful, very clear information. I have noticed a distinct lack of deer tutorials....

Hi!

I am a high school art teacher and I am taking some art students to the La Brea Tarpits this Friday. I am looking for some good examples on how artists use their understanding of animal anatomy and I came across you wonderful page here! With your permission, I would like to use part of your Spotted Hyena Anatomy guide, (the bottom section) as a handout for students, (with a copyright crediting your work next to your images). All of these students are advanced art students taking college level art classes. I could collect the copies at the end of the field trip if you like. There will be about 40 students going.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter! :)
Ms. PC

Lovely guide :O
And yeah, it is amazing just how many people think they're related to the canines and don't get that they have nothing to do with the Wolf lineage. The untrained eye wouldn't think that the Hyena evolved from a kind of civet like creature.

It might also be useful to note that when hyenas walk they don't walk like most animals. They will step with both of their right legs at the same time, then both of their left legs- rather than opposite front and back legs like most four legged animals c:

Great tutorial, everything's broken down nice and simple!

And they're very much group animals and they have been observed helping out and feeding members of the pack who get injured in hunts. They look a bit grody but I like them. :)

It is very annoying that so many people draw hyenas with a wolfish anatomy or with a look like the hyenas from "The Lion King". Thank you very much for uploading this.

I  hyenas, too. I'm passionate about them. *works on a hyena story*

Ooh, could you do a tutorial on birds? I personally love birds, but I'm not the best at it... I don't care what kind... falcon, hawk, crow, eagle... they're all good!

This is pretty interesting... I knew that hyenas were feline... like, but I never looked into the anatomy that much. I looked into cat/dog anatomy, the skull is much more canine than feline (mostly at the teeth). It, in rough, looks actually like a hybrid between the two...

^__^ I'll be watchin!
