I've been stalking reading this tutorial for the past half-hour or so, and I have one thing to say... Hands are the first things I excelled at drawing. XD I would sit for hours staring at my left hand after posing it and furiously drawing it exactly. as. it. was. And I'm pretty sure everyone thought I was insane.
Seriously, tho, great tutorial! :3

Reading this tutorial, I learned biology more than the art, lol.
But thank you very much for the tutorial, really helped me a lot for better poses while keeping the anatomy accurate.

try to imagine the muscles and bones as the content of some bag( the skin ) . I hope this'll help you draw elbows ;)

If only I had found this tutorial sooner...  There would be less sketches that were scribbled out, torn up, thrown away or crumpled up in frustration...

I love it. It's genius. Worship

I realize you made this comment a long while ago, but word of advice:

You should look into getting a wooden hand, yknow, like the ones with joints and stuff if you need hand help. I got one and it really helped me develop a method of drawing hands right.

even after this: arms are difficult as BAWWZ to pose when just drawing on a whim and not having any objects in mind.

So, how does knowing the underlying bones and such help you draw the flesh that covers them?
Reply
:iconfoervraengd:
FOERVRAENGD Featured By Owner May 17, 2013  Professional General Artist
the flesh are attached to the bones.

:icontidalespeon:

How so, exactly? Are the outer contours similar to the underlying structure, or what?

well you'll have to know how the bones are otherwise you wont have any basic foundation for the muscles. because, as I said, the muscles are attached to the bones. The bones meazure out the proportions, which is important in basic anatomy.

Yeah, but that doesn't tell me how the skin fits around those muscles.

Go study biology and you'll know how skin is attached to muscles. I'm getting a bit tired of this.

Thank you so much. I have always had issues drawing hands, and this helped a lot. I'm not surprised they're classified as the hardest to draw, probably because of their extreme dexterity. The whole body is really a wonder of nature when you look at all the stuff it has to get right, and the hands especially.

This is rather off-topic.
I was born without a pinkie knuckle on my right hand. It's amazing how much that completely changes the hand structure... The pinkie is waaaaay short, its movement is slower and more constricted, and when I close my hand into a fist and look at the back of my knuckles, it creates a huge slope where the knuckle should be. Makes the fist different from the front, too.
I compare my right hand to my left all the time. Freaks me out, sorta. (I think it amazes me more, though.)

Wow, that sounds (if you excuse me) quite fascinating. Does having a less functional pinkie make a bigger difference compared to your other hand?

:iconbashlomi:
Bashlomi Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2012
Well, it certainly makes typing correctly weird. I usually "hunt and peck" keys anyway, but when I took a typing class, my ring finger had to do all of the pinkie's work. Otherwise, it's not too incredibly different... Mainly the strangest part is that it's so short. It barely goes past the second knuckle on my ring finger. (Or, rather, it's not that the finger is short--it's the same size as my other pinkie--but that it starts so much lower on the hand.)

Herp derp. My hands must be abnormally small then Dx They aren't quite long enough to completely cover half of my face :'C

But that's hardly on topic.
I just wanted to say thanks for this C: Hands are such a pain, and if there's one thing that makes me completely hate a drawing of mine, it's the hands. Very rarely can I get them right (And if I do, then the arms look wrong, ack!)
This should be a big help to me C: As well as the other tutorials (Though I've yet to check them out just yet :>)
Thank you again :>
