A BIT MORE ABOUT THE FACE SEEN IN PROFILE:

AHAHAH OH GOD WHY AM I DOING THIS?!?
Nah nevermind, it's 01:09 AM here and the train home doesn't go until 03:40 AM so I just wanted to do this tutorial which I sort of promised people.

I realised it's better to just break this all down into several parts, even though I wished I could put all my thoughts into one deviation...

Enjoy! I hope you guys learn something from this.

Yes I know I forgot to mention ears and the neck. This is all pretty much improvised believe it or not

MANGA to REALISTIC: PART ONE by *BittersweetDisease Suggesters Words A great tutorial series for any manga artist (or other comics too) who want to start experimenting in the strange territory of realism, but have been to overwhelmed to start! ( Suggested by MinervaGem and Featured by shelldevil )

Thank YOU! I just finished reading through the whole tutorial, and it's exactly what I was needing! Just one question: do you have a place where I can copy/print the "polygon face map"? I don't mean to copy your work, its just that I do better with a reference right in front of me and when building faces it made it easier to study your drawing.
~Thank you!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS TUTORIAL!

I always liked to draw, but when I was in middle school I was too lazy to learn or practice drawing real people, so I just drew manga-styled people because it was "easier." YEARS LATER, once I finally tried to branch out to new styles, I found that every time I tried to draw people they always looked "manga-esque." I was so frustrated, and couldn't figure out how to break the habit since I'd been drawing that way for so long. This tutorial has helped more in a few posts than months, if not years of other methods combined.

I've been practicing with the "realistic vs manga" face proportions, and it has helped so much. Right now I can still only draw "face drawn in manga with realistic proportions," but it's so much more than I could do before. I look forward to getting better! <3

All your tutorials have been so helpful! I'm new to deviant art, but I've been drawing for years and I'm self-taught for the most part. I have a lot of bad habits that are really limiting me and I can definitely see these tutorials as helping correct that!

Thank you so much for this! I just felt not satisfied enough drawing manga and want to transfer to realistic manga instead, and I'm a young artist looking for tips in general so this will help me a lot! I even use a new notebook to write notes from the tutorial. x3

I don't think we need less manga art and more realism, I think we need less manga art and more cartoony/western art.

thankyou.  i don't necessarily draw manga [however i was gripped by akira and i love a lot of manga art and there is no turning back the clock of how it has impacted the west by now, for sure]  - but i missed all of the classes on how to mathematically plot out a human figure [early 90's] and i am tired of wingin' it. my classmate who graduated [i did not] went on to teach the very class i missed each friday - for more than a decade.  he has retired and is still professional artist.  he still draws cartoons his way- that is his job- but he can "do this".  i have to fight to keep from procreating "precious moments exploding into for better or for worse on a sick bed of abstract maybe that is hair and how long will i ride on the coat-tails of sam kieth though i love his art so much?"  i do have a style - or i did -  but it would be better if it had some sort of girth and a real system behind it.  my gesture drawings- or sketches are decent and piled high to our 500 square foot ceiling dating back to a president i do not want to even mention and many on this very art board were not even born when this one was in office [i was in high school] - however without a system it is pretty difficult to finish any project, so i feel pretty low about this.

i actually would like to draw manga now - or my own representation of it how it has impacted me - the design in manga is intoxicating.  good manga artists still know "where things should go" in order to make "these adjustments".  they also understand color intrinsically - another thing i do not understand at all.

anyhow-  i will be looking into all of your tutorials.  this is really great.  thanks again - srry for long comment.

Thank you for this! I've found many "tutorials" that showed you how/where the guidelines worked but none of them explained it quite so clearly. :) I've been wanting to create a style of my own that partly anime but leaning more on the realistic side. :D

I am very desperate, because my art sucks I can't get any better. (Well sometimes I feel as I have improved. But than I look at some picture some 12 year old has drawn and I crawl back in my hole. I am 19 btw) So I have decided to draw every picture you have drawn in all 12 parts of this tutorial series. I just hope this will help me improve. And thank you for your wonderfull tutorials. They are realy helpfull especialy since I am learning to draw on my own.

While I am a fan of these proportions as they can be something of a godsend (especially when just starting to draw realistically) I think it should be pointed out that they should be played with at least a little bit because everybody is different and if you follow these rules absolutely to a T every single time, you could be at risk of developing "same face syndrome" or losing some of the individuality of your style.

So to anybody out there who's listening: Yes, use these proportions as a guide! They are very good and have stood the test of time. However, they are no "be all and end all" and having slightly outlandish facial proportions on characters is better than having uber-realistic clones. It's generally harder for artists to create individual-looking faces without bending the rules somewhat, which is why it's probably more important to concentrate on getting bodily rather than facial anatomy correct once you have this down.

I forgot if I commented on any of these series or not, I re read these when I have those days where I can't just draw. Anyways, I really love this one how you have the side by side comparisons of the realistic proportions with anime proportions. It really shows the difference between the two which I find interesting ,being able to see and compare the two and seeing exactly what part of the proportions are changed from one another :)
